Life

Moan, groan, repeat…

I spent last weekend up in Scotland, visiting my mum, and had a really lovely time. However, as soon as my sister picked me up from the train station in Dunfermline, I realised she was sick. I quickly found out that my mum was too, as well as my niece.

So I spent the weekend surrounded by ill people, coughing and sneezing their germs into my vicinity. It’s hard to be annoyed at people you love, especially when they’re not feeling great.

The germs – so they say – had originated in my niece’s nursery, a veritable hotbed of illness, germs and assorted bacteria. She regularly brings home illnesses of all kinds and quite generously gives them to the rest of her family.

My mum actually got worse before she started to feel better, with a lot of coughing and sneezing and rapid-onset hot and cold spells. While we made it to the cinema on Friday afternoon, we had to cancel our planned dinner out on Saturday and instead, ordered in.

And as sure as day follows night, I woke up this morning feeling rancid. I have a headache that would fell a horse and, while I don’t have a cough or any urge to sneeze, my joints ache and all I want to do is sleep.

Except I can’t.

I have too much to do. So I decided to work from home today and hack away at my to-do list. I even took a break a little after lunchtime, to get a nap – but couldn’t fall asleep. The headache was (still is) pounding like a drum, so I’ve no hope of getting any sleep. But it was just nice to lie down for a while.

Meanwhile, it hurts to look at the screen, so it’s been hard to get much work done. I’m just glad I could lounge around in sweatpants and be as comfortable as possible – no need to head into my office.

I’m also thankful I’ve no business travel this week – no need to get on a plane until next Monday, when I fly to Barcelona. If needs be, I can work from home tomorrow as well. I’ll get to bed early this evening and hope to sweat it out. I believe there’s some whiskey left ofter to make a hot whiskey – this is my nuclear option for colds.

Here’s hoping I’m feeling a lot better tomorrow and can get back in the saddle and be productive. Today has basically been a write-off…
