In an effort to make up for yesterday’s lack of exercise, I got out of my bed this morning and headed out for a run before I could change my mind.
I ran two workshops and recorded a work podcast yesterday, so my brain was mush by the time I was due to go to the gym. So I skipped it! I was actually in bed a little after 9pm and slept right through to this morning’s alarm, so I think I did the right thing.
Especially given my performance this morning. Without intending to, I’ve managed to hit a new personal best for a 5k run: I finished it in 24:57, hitting an average pace of 4:58/km.
It was cold, dark and very windy when I hit the Thames Path this morning at 7:15am, but somehow I managed to go faster than ever before and keep the pace going throughout. I know exactly why I slowed down during the third kilometre – congestion! By that point, the Thames path had quite a few more cyclists and runners, making narrower pavements and navigating corners more of a challenge.
And I most definitely had a dose of the ‘runner’s high’ when I got back to my apartment, which lasted all the way until I arrived at my office. It’s relatively easy for me to squeeze in a 5k run before work in the morning, so I’m going to try to stick to an every-other-day schedule (got to think of my knees!).
It’s a great way to kick off the day! The finishing, I mean – not the heading out into the cold when all you want to do is get into the shower and keep warm. 😝
