My Top 10 Most Popular Posts of 2018

As we’re nearly at the end of the year, it’s time to examine if anyone’s actually been reading this blog! A quick review of the stats tells me that’s the case, though I’m still not sure why.

It can’t be the absence of a single theme or focus or the irregular posting schedule. I know it’s nothing to do with the prevalence of selfies or references to my predilection for removing my clothing at the drop of a hat (pun intended).

And it’s not like we’re all short of things to read on the internet – so you tell me: why do you keep coming back? I’m intrigued. Let me know in the comments.

The WordPress stats tells me that, of the posts I wrote this year, these are the most read:

1. Surviving my first WBNR

Typical! The most popular post of the year is the one that features me naked, surrounded by other naked people, discussing the role of public nudity to raise awareness of various issues. All on bikes. Yes, it was my first ever participation in the World Naked Bike Ride, London.

This one got shared all over the place, even though there’s not too much in the way of gratuitous flesh. As I said at the time, it was a fun afternoon out and I’d do it again – as long as the weather was warmer.

2. Tumblr Apocalypse Pending

Here, I basically let rip at Tumblr’s recent decision to ban nudity from their platform. As I predicted (see below) their heavy-handedness resulted in lots of posts getting barred which featured no nudity (or even people) and basically caused lots of people to leave for pastures new. Nudity isn’t the same as erotica or even porn, but Tumblr wasn’t having any of it. Even my own very tame Tumblr got some of the same treatment…

3. With the sand between my toes

Post-WNBR, I jetted off to Sitges to celebrate Pride and spend most of my time naked on the beach and singing in the bars. A typical visit to Sitges, for me at least. I was in need of a blast of sun and some downtime listening to the sea – and intensive people-watching. I also coined the term (for me, at least) of ‘contextual naturist’. So there.

4. A plethora of note-taking apps

Back to my focus on technology and trying to be productive. No travel or public nudity here. I felt a bit overwhelmed with the various ways you can take and access notes on digital devices and basically brain-dumped my thoughts into this post, describing how I like to use Bear Notes, Evernote and Apple’s own Notes app.

Months later and I’ve yet to arrive at a solution I’m completely comfortable with. But that’s a moan for another day.

5. Watching Tumblr Tumble

Another complaint about Tumblr’s approach to managing its porn-bot problem (while leaving the Nazis and the hate-speech intact). There’s definitely no simple solution to this, but that’s exactly what they deployed – with predictable consequences.

I try not to be too controversial when writing here, but this event really annoyed me in both its cack-handedness and its impact on average people just sharing their photos with an audience.

6. Hands up if you’re a lazy, boozy fatty

I started 2018 with some soul searching about my health habits. Having spent most of December eating and drinking more than a man of my shape should, I committed to making some changes.

I won’t say I’ve been an angel in 2018, but I started this morning (Christmas Eve!!) with a 14km run around London and I now weigh almost 5kg less than I did when I started the year. This includes several ups and downs along the way, obviously. But I’m happy with the general direction of travel and intend to carry these habits over into 2019.

Hopefully making more progress along the way!

7. The Tyranny of Body Hair

One of the great ironies of my life is the absence of hair on my head and the surplus of hair everywhere else on my body. A situation that is only getting more serious with age! I’d finally had enough and committed my worries to this blog – readers obviously agreed, or simply enjoyed the thought of me man-scaping on a regular basis.

I hope it was the former.

8. Is Evernote on the way out?

I had a bit of a wonder about the future of one of my most used apps earlier this year. And obviously, it struck a chord. I know I’m not alone in wondering if we’ll still have an Evernote this time next year (I hope we do!) but it’s always good to have a back-up plan when it comes to important information.

9. And so it begins…judged by a bot

As I predicted, Tumblr’s porn-hunting bots got it wrong. over and over. I woke up one morning to find that a number of my posts had been tagged ‘naughty naughty’. I can attest to the fact that they were far from naughty, one post featuring a hotel bed. No people at all.

I’m still slightly concerned that my nipples in one selfie were too ‘female presenting’ for the bots? Hopefully, a renewed fitness regime will help out with that.

10. Reading comics, while saving money?

Yes! A comics-related post made it into the top ten. I outlined how my spending on digital comics had gone completely nuts and how I subscribed to Marvel’s own all-you-can-read deal, saving a fortune in the process.

Several months later, I’ve yet to buy another comic and I’m quite happy to access Marvel’s new releases six months later while also dipping into their substantial archive going all the way back to the 1960s.

Going forward?

So there you have it – even if you weren’t initially looking for it. What’s missing? Quite a few of my travel-related writing, but they all featured in the ‘long tail’ after these big hitters. Does this mean I’ll use this top ten to guide what I’ll write about in 2019?

I think you’re confusing me with someone who actually plans what they’re going to write about online.

That said, it’s safe to say I’ll continue to write about my attempts at weight loss, my running around London, my flights hither and thither, my travels to clothing optional beaches, my challenges with information-gathering apps and my obsession with super-heroes.

Here’s to another year of over-sharing on the internet!
