So near, yet so far: iPhone X lust

@TheFrankFlyer managed to snag us a couple of iPhone X handsets on launch day, while I was working in Barcelona. I tried my best to do the purchasing, hunched over my iPad and iPhone in my client’s office, but I couldn’t event get into the Apple Store before he’d bought them for us. So yay!

On the other hand, the phones were delivered to our apartment on Friday. That’s also a yay, right? Not exactly. I’ve been working in Dublin since Thursday and I’m still here! The frustration has been palpable.

Yes, I fly back this evening and I know my evening will be spent unwrapping and exploring the phone’s newness and beauty (fanboy! yes!) and that I’ll stay up far too late recording obscene animoji messages for friends.

I have to say I wavered a little when the iPhone X was announced. I missed the streamed announcement and had to catch up via twitter and various tech blogs’ hot takes. I wasn’t convinced, and I think I’d absorbed some of the blogs’ negativity and cynicism.

But when push came to shove – that is, when it was available for sale – I leaped. Why?

A nice, bright and large screen iPhone in a much smaller footprint. A kick-ass camera. Wireless charging. I’m not that amazed by facial recognition technology, finding it ever so slightly creepy. Also, I’m someone whose face changes regularly – glasses on and off, beard shape changing and yes, weight changing – which seems to show in my face before anywhere else. So it will be interesting to see how well it works for me.

@TheFrankFlyer has already sold our existing handsets, which takes some of the sting out of the price – but not all.

I have high hopes that this will be my perfect iPhone. Photos and my very own hot takes to follow.

Meanwhile, I’ll sit here in this Dublin coffee shop, sipping my excellent coffee, look out at the sunshine over St. Stephen’s Green and look forward to some geektastic unboxing this evening!

  1. I opted for the iPhone 8 Plus. For the first time, I could not justify features for price comparison. I have enough trouble unlocking my iPhone with my thumbprint to gamble on it recognizing my face to answer a call. When X.2 comes out, I may have a different opinion and more cash to burn. 😃

    • At least Apple is offering choice – there’s a range of handsets, sizes and price points. In all honesty, I think I’m taking a gamble but I can always return it if it doesn’t work out. In which case I’ll go for the 8 Plus.

  2. Enjoy your new toy! Have fun and remember you don’t have to experience every feature all in one day! Naked hugs!

Lucky you – enjoy. My 7 Plus is barely a year old so it’ll be the 2018 revision phone I get, at the earliest!
