A Humungous Lunch at Bodean’s

This year’s birthday celebrations have indeed stretched across three days. Today’s culinary adventure took us to Bodean’s on Tower Hill. If you haven’t been, let me summarise it for you: meat, meat, meat and more meat in various stages of deliciousness.

Famous for BBQ ribs, pulled pork and numerous amazon chicken dishes, Bodean’s is the kind of place you need to go with an appetite. They don’t really do ‘snacks’. Each of my visits has been more like a mission to consume as many calories as a man of my reduced stature can.

I’ve succeeded each time.

Today, I thought I’d play it safe. I visited the gym this morning and just had a very light breakfast (the now-usual banana smoothie). Add to this a brisk walk from Canary Wharf to Tower Hill and I thought I’d be able to tackle whatever was thrown in my direction.

I started with Bodean’s equivalent of an amuse bouche: the BBQ chicken “Thunder Thighs”, which were incredibly more-ish and left my mouth and lips tingling nicely. It also left me wondering if I’d once again ordered too much. Because this “starter” was followed by the monstrosity below: the “1lb Burrito”.

Filled with pulled pork, chillies, spicy cheese and a host of other delicious, it seemed to get bigger with each bite, not smaller. No matter how much I ate, it never seemed to get any smaller. I foolishly tried to eat the accompanying spicy rice, but quickly realised I was on a hiding to nothing. It had to the the burrito or nothing.

As you can see from the evidence below, I pretty much succeeded. Leaving a few scraps of burrito and a smattering of rice on the plate, I stumbled out into the (unexpected) London sunshine, eager to walk around in case my heart stopped working due to a burrito-related blockage. Evernote Camera Roll 20140222 201531

I can definitely recommend Bodean’s to anyone with an appetite for perfectly cooked meat. If you’re more of a salad fan or are keen to limit your daily calories, I fear you may be barking up the wrong tree. For everyone else, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a no brainer if you’re up for a “man versus food” type gastronomic challenge.

By way of illustration, I finished eating at 3pm today. It’s now a little before 9pm and I haven’t eaten since.

“Dinner” tonight is likely to consist of a piece of fruit.
