While in NYC, I treated myself to a gadget. I got one of these:
It’s an amazing little bluetooth keyboard designed for the iPad Mini. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can and do type quite effectively using the on-screen keyboard. But for longer blog posts or documents, it can be helpful to use a real physical keyboard.
I’ve had a couple of days to get used to it and can honestly say I love it. It’s easy to use – taking just a few minutes to get comfortable with the restricted size. It took about 10 seconds to set up and is completely idiot-proof.
Handily, it includes some iPad-specific shortcut keys (e.g. a “home” button). It weighs next to nothing and when not in use as a keyboard, it forms a protective case for the iPad. The back of the keyboard has built-in magnets which form a hinge, just list one of Apple’s smart covers.
In the “could do better” category, I wish it would stay closed when acting as a cover. I’d like a more secure latch or similar, as I wonder if it’ll open up of its own accord when in my bag. Also, the cursor keys seen to be less functional that I’d like. For example, you can’t use them to move between emails in the Mail app.
Overall though, it’s a good piece of kit and is definitely more “useful” than “gimmicky”.
