I’ve been trawling the internets since yesterday’s product annoucement from Palm. Their new handset, the Pre, looks great. I have to admit, if I didn’t have an iPhone, I’d seriously consider getting one. Some lovely pics of the interface here – it looks very smooth and… Apple-like? That’s a compliment, believe me. I’m suitably impressed by the attempts to tie up all your contact data, from multiple sources, avoiding duplification. The bane of anyone’s life who has contacts in more than one place i.e. Facebook, Outlook, GMail etc. This should go down very well with the masses.
Could this save Palm? The signs are good. The handset and new OS were generally well received at CES and Palm’s stock rose shortly thereafter. It looks like they really did their homework this time and didn’t just reissue an aging Treo in slightly updated clothes.
The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating. I’m looking forward to reading about how the Pre performs once it’s released. I won’t be tempted away from my iPhone – but I’ll be grateful for any injection of competition this development can achieve in the smartphone market. Consumers can only win.
